Revealing three ways you can protest and lower your property taxes.

Do you want to protest your property tax appraisal? By now, all property owners should have received a notice of the appraised values for the properties they own. The notice is not a tax statement, but a proposed value for this year. If you think your property tax appraisal is too high, don’t worry; you have the right to protest it at your local appraisal district. Here are three main ways you can protest your property taxes

1. Use your closing statement as evidence. If the appraised value for your property is higher than the amount you purchased it for in 2023, you can present your closing statement as proof during the property tax protest hearing.

2. Use property tax protest services. They usually don’t charge upfront fees and only charge a percentage of the tax savings, once tax savings are achieved.

3. Ask your Realtor to run comps. You can ask your trusted Realtor to run comps or check recent sales in your neighborhood from 2023. This data may help support your claim for a lower appraisal value.

Having noted all that, please don’t forget that the deadline for protesting your property tax appraisal is on May 15, 2024. If you want to speed up the process to beat the deadline, or if you just have a lot of things to handle and don’t have enough time on your hands, we are more than equipped to help you navigate this process.
